266/367: Cults - You Know What I Mean
So I shamelessly enjoy when great 60’s music is sonically & thematically modded to reflect the dark caverns of 80’s & 90’s (& 00’s [& 10’s]) pop. This has been established (by me, at least; I’m guessing no one else has bothered to establish this about me). Cults’ whole debut does this, with the blown out, reverbed up production & bummed out themes creating an unsettling contrast with Madeline Follin’s teen-y not-so-tiny voice. After all, an essential element of recreating the 60’s girl group sound, is sounding like a girl.
& not only is Cults a sonic homage, but in the case of “You Know What I Mean”, it’s a straight-up melodic homage.
rave on.

I feel like I’m at a private Catholic school’s battle of the bands & that’s not a good thing.
