“The Electrical Brain,” a 15-part Batman (& Robin) serial Columbia Pictures made in the early 40’s. i had this on vhs when i was a kid. of course, then i just thought it was a cool tape with old black-&-white episodes of a batman tv show from black-&-white times (i clearly didn’t pay much attention to the whole “will batman surviiiive? SEE the next episode, NEXT week, in this SAME theatre” part). i also had no idea how much racist-ness (racism) is thrown around in there. i probably understood on some internally in-articulated level that it was trying pretty hard to make Japanese people appear less-than, but i didn’t get the full craziness of it. For instance, the creative phrasing (“…your twisted, oriented brain…”) that describes the main villain, Dr. Daka. or the ridiculous overuse of the j-word (“jap”). But, forgiving all that (sort of), it’s fun, cheap, horrible, fun stuff. & basically proto-tv. which is interesting.

so, i’m pretty sure it’s a huge waste of time to sit around watching 40’s serials on youtube, & i should probably not look for Dick Tracy, Flash Gordon & The Phantom Empire. kinda want to, though.

oh yeah, & there’s zombies (not in the strict sense, but in the brainwashed-by-a-mad-scientist sense) in this Batman serial. & Robin is hilarious.

is justifiably sleeping all the time. sleep’s the best. but my brain would rather be awake & miserable than asleep & less miserable (lay mizzerabh).

the other day i was genuinely excited to go to a library booksale. i get to fill up a giant paper bag with books & it costs how much? 10? less? 5? what!!? 1 dollar? it’s amazing. i didn’t even have very many great finds. no James Ellroy or Don DeLillo (that I don’t already have). but i’m paying a dollar, so no matter what happens, i feel pretty accomplished (“a couple Elmore Leonards; that novel, Sway, about the Stones & Manson I read about once; a super cheap-o pbk Dick Tracy strip collection; a 68 year old book called “The Portable Murder Book”; & some other stuff. oh, & 2 Joni Mitchell records? i win.”)

i set the bar pretty low for getting excited about stuff, i guess. stuff in general, & stuff as in things. i’m sort of envious of people who don’t care about stuff. again, in general & as in stuff-things stuff & stuff. alright, i’m not making any sense, so i think that means stop this. i also just looked at the word “stuff” & thought it might be spelled wrong for a second. which i think means i’ve been typing it way too much. & stuff!!!! alright.
